Moving to San Miguel de Allende means living in a colonial town of about 72,000 people at 6,290 feet, one to one and a half hours by road from two airports with nonstop flights to US cities. There is a private hospital in town and larger hospitals in Querétaro, about an hour away. To stay longer than 180 days you'll need Mexican residency.
Safety deserves a straight answer up front: Guanajuato, the state San Miguel is in, carries a Level 3 "Reconsider travel" advisory from the US State Department, while Mexico overall is Level 2. We cover what that advisory says, word for word, further down, along with daily life, flights, healthcare, residency, Spanish and water.
Moving to San Miguel de Allende: what daily life looks like
The municipality had 174,615 residents in the 2020 census, and the city itself about 72,000. The census counted about 4,300 foreign-born residents, 3,518 of them born in the US. Local estimates that include part-time residents run from about 14,000 to 25,000. In 2025 alone, Mexico issued 697 temporary and 656 permanent residency cards to US nationals living in San Miguel.
Days are built around walking. In Centro, San Antonio and Guadiana, groceries, cafés and the Jardín are on foot, over cobblestones. Evenings bring exhibitions and performances at Bellas Artes (the Centro Cultural Ignacio Ramírez, founded in 1938) and the Teatro Ángela Peralta, which opened in 1873. The calendar includes a chamber music festival in August, a jazz and blues festival in November and the San Miguel Writers' Conference, next held February 10–14, 2027.
Weekends often head out of town. The official tourism site lists 11 wineries nearby, Dos Búhos among them at km 2.8 of the road to Buenavista. Golfers choose between Ventanas de San Miguel (18 holes, designed by Nick Faldo), Club de Golf Malanquín and the nine-hole course at Zirándaro.
The climate is semi-arid and temperate. The yearly mean is 18.2 °C (64.8 °F); January nights average 4.6 °C (40 °F) and May afternoons 30.8 °C (87 °F). About 74% of the 632 mm (24.9 in) of yearly rain falls from June to September, and December is nearly dry. Pack layers for winter nights.
Getting there: BJX and QRO airports
San Miguel has no airport of its own. Two airports serve it, both with US nonstops:
| Querétaro (QRO) | Guanajuato (BJX, in Silao) | |
|---|---|---|
| Drive to San Miguel | About 1–1.5 h (75 km) | About 1.5–1.75 h (95 km) |
| American | Dallas/Fort Worth | Dallas/Fort Worth |
| United | Houston | Houston |
| Aeroméxico | Atlanta, Detroit | Atlanta |
| Viva | Dallas, Houston, San Antonio | Chicago O'Hare, Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston, San Antonio |
| Volaris | Chicago, Los Angeles; Dallas, Denver, San Antonio, Orlando and Houston announced in April 2026 | Chicago O'Hare and Midway, Fresno, Los Angeles, Oakland, Ontario, Sacramento |
Delta doesn't fly its own aircraft to either airport. The Atlanta and Detroit flights are Aeroméxico, Delta's joint-venture partner. Mexico City's airport is about 3.5 to 4 hours away by road. Routes change by season, so check with the airline before you book.
Plan to land in daylight. The State Department advises US citizens not to travel between cities after dark, so a morning or early-afternoon arrival and a pre-booked transfer is the standard approach.
Healthcare
In San Miguel. Hospital MAC San Miguel de Allende, at Camino a Alcocer 12, has an emergency room, adult and neonatal ICUs, CT, MRI and a hemodynamics unit, with 17 beds. The state health ministry also runs a general hospital in town.
In Querétaro. About 65 km away, Hospital Ángeles Querétaro has a 24-hour emergency room, and Hospital H+ Querétaro has an ICU, emergency care, oncology and a heart institute.
Paying for it. Medicare usually doesn't cover care in Mexico. Medigap's foreign travel benefit pays 80% after a US$250 deductible, up to US$50,000 for life, and only in the first 60 days of a trip, which helps visitors more than residents. The options are private Mexican plans, international plans and IMSS voluntary coverage, which costs MXN 20,600 a year per person aged 60 to 69 in 2026. Many hospitals in Mexico won't discharge a patient until the bill is paid. Our guide to the cost of living in San Miguel de Allende has the insurance ranges.
The US Consular Agency in San Miguel is at Plaza La Luciérnaga, Libramiento José Manuel Zavala 165.
Residency basics
As a visitor you can stay up to 180 days. To live here, you apply for a residency visa at a Mexican consulate in the US, then finish the process with INM, the immigration institute, within 30 days of arriving. The 2026 thresholds are set in UMA, Mexico's reference unit:
- Temporary residency (up to four years): net income above MXN 79,771 a month (about US$4,330) for six months, average savings of MXN 1,344,373 (about US$73,000) over 12 months, or real estate worth more than MXN 10,758,500 (about US$584,000).
- Permanent residency for retirees: a pension above MXN 133,733 a month (about US$7,260) or savings of MXN 5,378,664 (about US$292,000). Temporary residents can switch to permanent after four years.
Consulates publish their own dollar figures, and they differ. Our guide to Mexico residency through real estate walks through each route.
Two details catch movers off guard. A US car can stay on a temporary import permit only while you're a visitor or temporary resident; permanent residents can't hold one. And Directo a México, the channel that carries US federal pensions into Mexican bank accounts, closes on November 20, 2026, so keep a US bank account for Social Security.
Buying a home is simpler here than on the coast. San Miguel is outside Mexico's restricted zone, so you hold direct title after filing a written agreement with the Foreign Ministry (SRE), at a 2026 fee of MXN 5,250. The full sequence is in how to buy property in Mexico as an American.
Learning Spanish
Notaries, landlords, IMSS and your neighbors work in Spanish. San Miguel has schools that have taught it for decades: the Academia Hispano Americana at Mesones 4 opened in 1959, Warren Hardy Spanish has taught here since 1990, and the Instituto Allende at Ancha de San Antonio 22 offers Spanish courses alongside art workshops.
Water and altitude
The town sits at 1,917 meters (about 6,290 feet). Give yourself a few days before you take on the hillside streets of Balcones or Ojo de Agua.
Water takes some planning. SAPASMA, the municipal utility, issues the feasibility letter needed for a new connection, and homes store water in cisterns and rooftop tanks. The NGO Caminos de Agua reports that the regional aquifer is dropping 0.5 to 2 meters a year, with rising arsenic and fluoride, and it offers a full water test for MXN 1,400. Plan on filtration for drinking water, and test any well before you buy.
Safety: what the State Department says
The State Department's Mexico advisory, issued May 29, 2026, rates Mexico overall at Level 2, "Exercise increased caution," and Guanajuato at Level 3, "Reconsider travel," due to terrorism, crime and kidnapping. It states that "Gang violence in Guanajuato mostly happens in the southern and central areas," often connected to the theft of oil and natural gas, and that US citizens and lawful permanent residents have been victims of kidnapping. US government employees may not travel on Federal Highway 45D or to the areas south of it, including Celaya, Salamanca and Irapuato.
San Miguel de Allende is not named in the current text, except as the address of the Consular Agency. Earlier versions listed San Miguel among tourist areas without restrictions; that line no longer appears. Querétaro state, where QRO airport sits, is Level 2 with no specific restrictions for US government employees.
The advisory strongly advises US citizens to follow the nationwide rules set for government staff: no travel between cities after dark, dispatched taxis or apps such as Uber and Cabify instead of street taxis, and no traveling alone in remote areas. If you fly into BJX, ask your transfer company which route it takes.
